Relieving Dental Anxiety
One of the best ways to relieve dental anxiety is to just sit and listen to them. They might have had a poor experience in the past, they might have been in previous offices where they felt rushed, where they weren't called by their name. A lot of that stuff comes down to just listening because nowadays that's a commodity that ... I mean, even when you try to make phone calls, you usually get a machine. So really that human element, being able to spend time with them, not rush them. We totally customize our schedule, meaning that patients aren't just plugged in a box, some patients truly need more time, they just do. It might not necessarily be me in the chair or me with them all time, sometimes it is, but it might be just having that team member that can sit with them either before the appointment, help them get comfortable after the appointment, help them kind of get comfortable again. Explain what went on today and what they need to do, write it down especially as with patients that get older, they don't remember quite as well, and then of course a lot of times patients who are highly anxious don't remember as well.
I think the biggest thing that I would say is spending the time with them, not rushing them and really explaining to them what we're doing and why we're doing, no surprises. Discuss the financial before we start, don't do any procedures unless they know what we're doing. Again, that comes down to, we tell them as much or as little as they want to know, everybody is different, but I think that's the main thing, it's just spending the time with them.

You might have bad memories of the dentist that make you anxious before your appointment. If so, we can provide sedation dentistry options during your visit, including:
- Nitrous oxide: You inhale this “laughing gas” through your nose, and it quickly induces a feeling of mild euphoria that removes anxiety or fear. The effects end almost as soon as you stop inhaling it.
- Oral sedation: You take this pill(s) at home just prior to your appointment. By the time you arrive, you will be in a deeply relaxed state. You will need someone to drive you to and from our office.
What Is Conscious Sedation?
There are times when it’s advantageous for Dr. Laos or Dr. Yoshikane to talk to you during a given treatment. That’s why we use a special form of dental sedation called conscious sedation. You will stay awake (hence the “conscious”) but will remain relaxed and unconcerned during treatment. This type of sedation can also allow you to get multiple treatments done in just one visit.
