Our Screening Process
What the Screening Involves
Dr. Blackburn looks at and feels the lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of the mouth, gums, palate and throat for sores, patches, lumps or color changes that should be looked at more closely. The exam takes only a few minutes and does not hurt.
Who Should Be Screened
Adults at every age benefit from regular screening. Tobacco use, heavy alcohol use, a history of HPV, and a sore or patch that has not healed in two weeks are reasons to schedule a visit sooner.
What Happens if Something Looks Unusual?
We explain what we see, take photos for your record, and refer you to an oral surgeon or specialist for a biopsy when needed. Most changes turn out to be harmless, and finding them early gives you more options.
